A speacal person in my life Essays

A speacal person in my life Essays A speacal person in my life Essay A speacal person in my life Essay A Special Person in My Life My Mother is an awesome woman. She always saw the good in everything. She is a very exceptional person. A fighter. She has worked very hard her entire life then it all came to an end May 2012. When I was little one my mother worked nights at a factory, and my father drove truck. Until my sister was old enough to stay home and watch me, we went to our grandmas and stayed. My mother had an outgoing personality, but she also had many other personalities. What mother doesnt? Most of all she is a very understanding woman. You couldnt ask for a better person. She worked several different Jobs while I was growing up. The last Job she worked was Dollar General. She started off Just being a sales clerk in 2003. Then a few years later she became store manager. My opinion you couldnt ask for a better manager. There were days she worked open to close, because one of the employees couldnt make it in. She was working on her seventh or eighth year when she started having problems. Her lower back started hurting bad and legs were starting to swell. She had been to the doctor several times, but all they kept giving her was pain pills. The actor said he would order an MR. and never did. After messing with this doctor for about six months to a year, my sister and I got tired of her hurting all the time and found a new doctor. A better doctor at that. She treated mom a lot better. Mom explained what was going on, and within a week she had and MR. scheduled for her. The MR. came back showing something on her kidney. So following that they done a biopsy. We had to wait at least two weeks before we found out the results. It wasnt good news. The spot on her right kidney came back as cancerous. It ended up being a three inch mass. We went to doctors after doctors to see what would be best for her. After seeing several doctors and running more test they had found more cancer. Three spots on her skull (not her brain). Some on her spine and one rib. The kidney doctor told us if she didnt do anything with the kidney she only had an estimate of five years. The neurologist said that if they didnt get her back taken care of as soon as possible, she wouldnt be walking in two to three months. She wasnt having that. So on May 25th, 2012 she went into surgery for a long seven hours. She obviously lulled through it. It has been a long recovery. Her back still hasnt healed up and its been over a year. We have been fighting stash infections ever since the back surgery. After her being out back in the hospital for the fourth or fifth time, we decided it was time to find different doctors. We even switched hospitals completely. Mom does have a wound Vic on and has for quite a while and will have until the chemotherapy and diabetes. Those make it even harder for a wound to heal. It has made a huge progress since this all started. Its been over a year since all this has appended and shes doing a lot better. Like I said shes a fighter. She has done ten treatments of radiation. Then started taking chemo through her port. It has been prolonged several times from having the infections and surgeries and being in the hospital. Just recently she got to take the wound Vic off for a week. The doctors called it a vacation for her, because it was starting to deteriorate her skin around her wound. Her chemo doctor had taken a look at her wound and thought it looked bad. Granted he hadnt seen it for over a month or longer so he hadnt seen the progress it was doing. He thought it look horrible. He demanded that she get put back in the hospital. So I rushed her down there the same day. He wanted her there by two but that didnt happen. I had to bring her back home and get clothes gathered up for her and other things, because we didnt know how long they were going to keep her. We ended up getting there about five pm and got her signed in and put in her room. They put her in isolation, which we didnt understand. After we seen the nurses and asked why, they told us it was because she previously had stash infection. Which was very understandable. Mom ended up being in there for three days Wednesday through Saturday. All her doctors had been in there to see her and none of them could figure out why she was even in the Im glad it happened though. The doctors ended up running bone scans, EMIRS and x-rays. They ended up finding more cancer in her right leg below her knee. Also found out her fibula is broken. The doctors couldnt explain how it got broken, but with her bones being so weak from the chemo, it could have been anything. They also found some abnormalities in her lower back. The doctors wasnt 100% sure if it was cancer either. I took her down on Wednesday and they let her out that following Saturday. The following Monday they started radiation on her lower back Just to be on the safe side and on her right leg. She got five treatments on her leg and ten on her back. When they done the scans on her they found out the chemo through the iv wasnt working cue her cancer had gotten bigger. After it had shrunk a little bit. So now the chemo doctor wants to put her on the chemo pill and hope and prays that it works. Vive not eared very good things about the chemo pill. I Just hope it does her good. When we found out that mom had cancer the one thing she said she wanted before something happened to her, was that her two daughters give her grandchildren. A little boy and a little girl. After both my sister and I got told we couldnt have kids. To our surprise we both ended up having grandchildren for her. We found out on Christmas that my sister was pregnant. So that was part of moms Christmas present. Then I found out I was pregnant on mothers day, so that was her mothers day present from me. My sister was due September 2nd and ended up having her little girl a month early. I was due the day before moms birthday and I ended up having my little boy on my dads birthday, three days after Christmas. God must work in mysterious ways because mom got what she wanted. Today. If it wasnt for my mother I wouldnt be who I am today and where I am at in life. She is such a wonderful person and I love her very much. After going through this with her makes me think twice about some choices Vive made in my life. Your time is limited and you need to follow your dreams.

Sequoyah essays

Sequoyah essays The Cherokee tribe is just one of the many tribes in North America. They originate from the southeastern portion of North America, presently the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. They are the only tribe to obtain a written language and a government modled upon the United States. Sequoyah, the most famous Cherokee, was the inventor of the written Cherokee syllabry. By bieng able to read and write their own language they were able to print newspapers and record historical events in Cherokee. This invention helped revolutionize the Cherokees society and culture. Sequoyah was born along the Tennessee River in the small village of Tuskegee, Tennessee in the 1770s. Unlike most Cherokee leaders Sequoyah was only half Cherokee. His father, Nathaniel Gist, was an English fur-trader and his mother, Wureth, was a member of the Paint Clan of the Cherokee tribe. One unique thing is that he had two names Sequoyah, his native american name, and George Gist, after his father. Sequoyah, his native american name, was given to him because of his walking dificulty dirived from While growing up he was traditionally reared in the old tribal ways and customs, and became a hunter and fur-trader. Further along his travels he obtained the skills of a Silvercraftsman and worked in Cherokee County, Georgia. He also joined the United States Army and faught in the Creek War in 1813-1814. Later in Georgia while selling one of his silver-works a man suggested that he sign his name to his works like the more popular craftsmen had began to do. Taking that into thought he became very interested in the idea. With that in mind he visited Charles Hicks, a wealthy farmer who was able to read and write in English, who showed him how to write his name on a piece of paper. Now able to write his own name in English, Sequoyah was determined to preserve the Cherokee culture and...

Children are victims of TV Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Children are victims of TV - Research Paper Example Watching television by the young children was considered by the analysts as cognitively passive (Kirkorian, Wartella, and Anderson 40). According to (Singer), the busyness created by watching television forms a sensory bombardment which generates a range of orienting responses which affect the reflection as well as cognition. This hinders children’s ability to process the content of television and learn from it. According to (Groebel), media has a big role in the formation of world views, world beliefs, cultural orientations, and the way values and images are distributed globally. (Huesmann and Eron) attribute the scapegoat role of television to the acceleration of violent crime as it has entered the homes of children. Watching television not only affects the academic and social life of children, it also spoils their habits. The research carried out by (Pine and Nash 529) led them to the conclusion that English children that view the television in general and particularly thos e who watch it alone are socialized in such a way that they become consumers at a very early stage in their life. â€Å"Young children have a limited understanding of commercial markets, and are unaware that advertisements are motivated out of a desire for profits† (Pine and Nash 530). They want to spend money and because they cannot get enough from their parents, their relationship with their parents distorts. Watching a lot of television increases children’s tendency to become criminals. It raises their aggression which they display in their schools and are likely to join gangs to participate in violence as they grow up. A study done by (Eron cited in Slotsve et al. 26) revealed that children that watched the most movies and television during their childhood had more tendency to be convicted of violent felonies or get arrested. Likewise, a research carried out by (Bogart) led to the finding that 22 per cent of the 100 criminals involved in the research had imitated t he acts of crime they had seen before over the television. Watching television affects the academic performance of the children in a bad way. Many research studies have tested this hypothesis that the attention spans of the children are shortened because of watching television (Singer; Healy). According to (Christakis et al.) and (Hartmann), watching a lot of television increases children’s vulnerability to a lot of complicated conditions like hyperactivity, attention and other issues of impulsivity. Likewise, (Koolstra and Van der Voort) concluded from their research that watching television leads the children to reduction of concentration in studies and lack of reading. Some studies have shown that watching television can be good for the academic performance of children. Most of these studies (Gentzkow and Shapiro) and (Fisch) have emphasized the role of educational programs in increasing children’s learning. However, the fact is that these educational programs make very less in proportion to the overall different kinds of programs shown on the television. Children are generally more interested in watching cartoons, commercials, and movies than the educational programs. Consequently, the negative effects of watching those programs entail. With proper intervention, it is possible to reduce the negative effects of television on children. In their research, (Rosenkoetter, Rosenkoetter, and Acock) made an attempt to reduce the negative effects of television violence on the lives of school-going children. The

Midtern take home assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Midtern take home assignment - Essay Example Marx believed that in this kind of system, the laborers are oppressed. They work a lot and yet they get very little. On the contrary, the capitalist hardly works at all and yet they get almost everything. And it is in these circumstances that Marx made the aforementioned statements. Due to oppression, people needed something to believe in. They feel weak and powerless against the system. They believe that there is nothing they can do. That change is beyond their power. And because of this desperation, the people needed to believe that there is a higher power. They need to believe, even if they don't understand why the system is so unfair, that all this is part of a greater plan. That someday, they will be at ease. They need to believe that someone out there is aware and sympathetic of their misery. That someone out there would give them comfort. Thru religion, the oppressed find hope. As such, Marx believed that religion is a response to oppression. This is the reason why he said that religion is "The sentiment of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions." Without a 'heartless world' or 'soulless condition', religion would not emerge. If people where truly satisfied with the current state of things, they would not look for other places for happiness. They would not turn to religion of hope and comfort. In this context, Marx also said "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed cre... Hence, to believe in a certain religion is the only thing that the oppressed can do to make them feel better. "It is the opium of the people" Marx said. And we all know that opium is a narcotic drug. And we are aware what narcotic drugs can do. They provide an illusion of happiness, a fantasy. They make you feel better without solving the problem. To Marx, this is what religion provides to the people. The happiness that religion provides is not real, only momentary and most importantly, it does not solve the problem of oppression. Since religion provides happiness and hope to the people, for the meantime, they are contented. This prevents them from seeing the situation for what it really is. Instead of questioning the system, their attention is diverted to religion. Because of this, Marx also believed that the capitalist actually uses religion to pacify the people and maintain the system. I think the capitalist are aware of how significant the laborers' contribution is to the whole production. And without laborer cooperation, the whole economic system will fall. So the capitalist encourage the development of religion to keep laborers happy. And if they are happy, they continue to work for the system. They don't realize that the system is actually unfair to them. They are actually being oppressed by this system. Second Part: Explain why the socialization of means of production would eliminate the need for religion. In a capitalist system, the capitalist owns the machineries and materials which the laborers use for production. As a result, bulk of the profit goes back to the capitalist. If there is a socialization of means of production, said machineries and materials would be owned by the people themselves. In turn, the

Fresh Water Pollution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Fresh Water Pollution - Essay Example Nutrient pollution is caused by excess seepage of nutrients into the water; microorganisms that live in the water cause microbiological pollution. Suspended matter is caused by pollutants whose molecules are too big to mix thus form a silt at the bottom or remain floating at the top. A number of human activities such as industries that releases their effluent to fresh water bodies bring about surface water pollution. Oxygen depletion is the result of the release of too much biodegradable waste into the water. Thus, the oxygen in the water is used up by the increased amount of organisms that break down matter. Chemical pollution refers to contamination of water by industrial and agricultural waste such as metals, detergents and pesticides. In addition, it may be caused by oil spillage. Finally, ground water pollution is caused by seepage of chemicals through the soil and into underground water sources such as wells and boreholes. This pollution is caused by human activities although some are natural as found in Bangladesh laced with arsenic. Excess fertilizer, animal manure and waste effluent, contain nutrients that stimulate excess plant and algae growth in the fresh water bodies; they cause the decomposing plants and animals to use the oxygen to depletion causing the death of the organisms and animals, as well as the plants. Agricultural and chemical waste like DDT that is persistent insecticides and pesticides accumulate in the fresh water harming fish and birds. In addition, oil from oil spills and coagulated chemicals from industries cause the birds in the water bodies to have their wings and feathers clogged up thus are unable to fly. Human and fecal waste may contain disease carrying organisms and pathogens, which causes cholera and typhoid among humans which may cause death and disease outbreaks. Chemical pollutants that find their

Creating A Database For Student Information System Computer Science Essay

Creating A Database For Student Information System Computer Science Essay A database brings convenient to todays working area such as large business company. The main purpose of a database is just similar to handling and keep large amount of files and documents in a large cabinet. However this method takes a large space and will be complicated to control and organized. This is why a database is introduced to keep these data organized to allow users to access, retrieve, and use of the data without any hassle. DBMS or Database Management System is software that used to set up a database, creating a database requires planning and gets to know what kind of data will be imputed. Creating a database will be easier after a simple table is constructed. In this assignment, a Student Information System is used as an example to keep student information in a database. Moreover Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access are example software provided by database vendor that used to create a database. Other than Student Information System as stated above, this software allows changes in database such as adding student entity relationship to expand the database. Microsoft Access is used to create Student Information System Entity Relationship(ER) because it has user-friendly interface compared to oracle and yet it is still a powerful tool to create a simple database. Define Question 1 1.0 What is Database and why is it needed? A database is a collection of various types of stored data so it can be used for operation purposes. These data can be organized in different modal such as hierarchical, network and relational models depend which one is suitable for that particular operation. A database plays an important role in many fields such as large companies, colleges as well as super markets we visit daily. Most of databases are being used in large business company which they often record their purchases, sales and keep track with employees information. Database record, store and process data to generate a variety of information for decision-making at the various levels in an organization or business company. However large number of information cannot be handle by just human alone this is why a database is used to complete these tasks accurate, relevant and timely. There are many advantages when database is used because: It helps reduces data redundancy. Has high processing speed to manage data in a very short time. It allows data sharing among different users. Maintain data independence to keep database safe even if one data is corrupted. Have better security because of different levels of access privileges controlled. It avoids data inconsistency. Reduces storage requirements. A database will not run on its own without software. Similar to computer, a computer will be useless without an operating system. This is why DBMS (Database Management System) is required in order running and allows manipulation in database. DBMS is software that uses SQL (Structured Query Language) that is a programming language that manages data in a database. SQL Manager for Oracle 1.1.0 Database of a Student Information System The concept of a database can be easily understood because it is similar if we create a table that stores different kind of information. It is encouraged to plan the database by making a simple table so that it will be easier when creating in DBMS. In this case Student Information System is created to store all students related information such as their index numbers, home addresses, gender and so on. The concept is started with record, which is a collection of related fields of an entity. Each record consists of several data Index Number First Name Last Name Age Gender Address Course Grade S0001 Julia Yasmin 17 F 13 Hibiscus Road BM A Student Information System in a College Index Number First Name Last Name Age Gender Address Course Grade Fee Paid S0001 Julia Yasmin 17 F 13 Hibiscus Road BM A Yes S0002 Nicholas Wong 18 M 24 Metro Street IT A Yes S0003 Niko Bellic 18 M 53 Hove Beach IT B No S0004 David Kim 17 M 4 Lake Garden IT B No S0005 Carl Johnson 18 M 77 Park Lane BM C No S0006 John Kay 17 M 22 Lin Seng Park BM B Yes S0007 Jasmine Stewart 17 F 16 Park Lane BM B Yes S0008 Tony Murphy 19 M 55 Brooker Road IT C Yes S0009 Tina Shaw 18 F 31 Hibiscus Road BM A No S0010 David Ford 18 M 28 Lake Garden IT C No Keyword: BM = Business Management, IT = Information Technology The table above shows that all student information is recorded in detail of a college. Index Number is created to identify each student. All different single line of records are grouped together to form a 10 records table. The table is also known as file, which is a collection of related records and these data will be stored in colleges main database. Primary Key A primary key is similar to Internet search engine (Google), for example when you search for the word food, immediately all food related websites and pictures would display. Each file may need a primary key in a database, which is an important key name for searching a particular record in the file as well as identify each record uniquely within relation. Primary key can be consists of index number or name because they have their unique name or integers. However primary key cannot be address because the name is long. When a database grows larger, these primary keys will be very important to help user to find particular data they needed. 1.2.0 The Relationship between Tables Since the database is related to student information, this table may be shared in several departments such as casher, lecturers, class and students overall examination grade. This relationship is known as Relation Model, which is basically consists of a set of interrelated tables. Data in a relational model are stored in two-dimensional tables. Each department will have different privilege to access different type of data and only display the information they need. Below is the shared information in several departments. 1.2.1 Casher Colleges Casher Index Number Casher Index First Name Last Name Age Gender Course Fee Paid S0001 C101 Julia Yasmin 17 F BM Yes S0002 C102 Nicholas Wong 18 M IT Yes S0003 C103 Niko Bellic 18 M IT No S0004 C104 David Kim 17 M IT No S0005 C105 Carl Johnson 18 M BM No S0006 C106 John Kay 17 M BM Yes S0007 C107 Jasmine Stewart 17 F BM Yes S0008 C108 Tony Murphy 19 M IT Yes S0009 C109 Tina Shaw 18 F BM No S0010 C110 David Ford 18 M IT No Primary Key: Casher Index The table shows that all necessary information required in casher such as fee paid and casher index to track students that are not yet paid their tuition fee. While students addresses and examination grade are hidden to reduce complexity because it is not necessary. This is called as external view because it allows user to have own view of the database. 1.2.2 Student list in a particular course Lecturers will have their own student list depend on which course they in charge. Since in real colleges database may consist over hundred of students, working with a large table can be troublesome and complicated. To make it easy, this large table will be needed to break up into two related table, which are Business Management and Information Technology classes. This concept is called data normalization. Normalization makes data more manageable and allows many data to be shared in just one database. This is because it removes data inconsistency as data is modified in one place as well as reduces storage requirement and data redundancy. Business Management Course (BM) Index Number Examination ID First Name Last Name Age Gender Course S0001 E1001 Julia Yasmin 17 F BM S0005 E1005 Carl Johnson 18 M BM S0006 E1006 John Kay 17 M BM S0007 E1007 Jasmine Stewart 17 F BM S0009 E1009 Tina Shaw 18 F BM Primary Key: Index Number Information Technology Course (IT) Index Number Examination ID First Name Last Name Age Gender Course S0002 E1002 Nicholas Wong 18 M IT S0003 E1003 Niko Bellic 18 M IT S0004 E1004 David Kim 17 M IT S0008 E1008 Tony Murphy 19 M IT S0010 E1010 David Ford 18 M IT Primary Key: Index Number The tables show that two different tables, which are Business Management Course and Information Technology Course. Students and their course can be easily indentified after the table is separated into two. We can clearly know that IT students are all male and both courses have equally five students each. 1.2.3 Students Examination Grade Index Number Examination ID First Name Last Name Course Grade S0001 E1001 Julia Yasmin BM A S0002 E1002 Nicholas Wong IT A S0003 E1003 Niko Bellic IT B S0004 E1004 David Kim IT B S0005 E1005 Carl Johnson BM C S0006 E1006 John Kay BM B S0007 E1007 Jasmine Stewart BM B S0008 E1008 Tony Murphy IT C S0009 E1009 Tina Shaw BM A S0010 E1010 David Ford IT C Primary Key: Examination ID The above table shows all students examination grade in the entire college and it is stored in Students examination database. This table is required for students certificate printout and act as a primary place for tracking student examination grade. Overall, all the tables had mentioned are the examples on how Students Information System is recorded in a college. This is a basic and very important step for a new user before data is record in Database Management software. Define Question 2 2.0.0 Student Information System Entity Relationship(ER) model We already know all the relationship between previous tables of Student Information System. However create a table only helps to know the concept of a database creation. In order to make these tables and their relationship more efficient and easy organized, database software is required. Therefore these tables are needed to transfer to Microsoft Access. With Microsoft Access, information in each column can be easily created. Creating relational tables will be faster because column of data can be copied from one table to others. 2.1.0 Relationship between tables in Microsoft Access 2.1.1 Primary Key Before tables can relate each other, a primary key is needed to declare in each table. The image above shows that primary key is declared in Students in Design View. A small key symbol (marked as small red circle) shows that Index Number has declared to primary key with primary key tool clicked (marked as large red circle). A particular field that needed to become primary key is highlighted and then Primary Key tool is clicked. 2.1.2 Relationship Chart Creating relationship between tables is easy because Microsoft Access has user-friendly interface, simply drag a data from one table to others and the relation line will appears Tables must link correctly in order to view their relationship. Primary Keys are linked to another tables, for example if we compare Students table with Casher table, Casher Index will become primary key while Index Number becomes foreign key. Note that small key symbol represents which data is primary key. Moreover, tables like Students and Examination Grade are having more than one matching table, which is called as parent table while the table they linked to are child tables. This relationship is called as One-to-Many relationship between different records or tables. 2.1.3 Relationship between Students and Casher Students The Student Information System is recorded into Microsoft Access as shown in image above. These information consists of students index number, which is an unique code that identifies each students. Other information such as First name, Last name, Age, Gender, Addresses and so on are also recorded inside this table. Casher The data in Casher table has created to record students fee paid. Some field such as Index Number and Course are shared together with Student table. Relationship between Students and Casher The table above shows the relationship between Students and Casher. From the first record we can clearly see Julia Yasmins casher index, course and her fee payment. While the last record we can identify that David Ford is in IT course and he is not yet pay his fee. The dropdown table will only appear when the relationship is linked correctly with relevant primary key from each table. 2.1.4 Relationship between Students Course and Students Examination Business Management Class Information Technology Class Business Management and Information Technology classes are separated into two different tables. These tables are also linked together with Students Examination Grade, which is to reveal their examination grade when it is opened. A drop down table from the tables above show that students examination grade is revealed. Two different dropdown tables is shown (marked as red colour border), when we look at the Information Technology Class. We can easily identify Nicholas Wongs examination ID, which is E1002 and gets grade A in examination. Similar to Tony Murphy, which has examination ID of E1008 and gets grade C in the examination. Students Examination Grade The table above shows the entire examination grade among every student, which exactly contains the same record from the table we had created from Question 1 (Page 9). As mentioned before, Students Examination Grade is linked to Students Course and this allows records also appear in Information Technology and Business Management Course. Overall, the tables in Microsoft Access made Student Information System organized in good manner and made user easily retrieve, access and view all students information in short time. Conclusion and Recommendation Information is an important resource in any organization and it must be properly managed. Database plays an important role because it allows information to be stored and organized in good manner. To handle large amount of information such as Student Information System, creating several tables is required to store different data such as name, index numbers, age and so on. Creating a database also requires knowledge on how data relate each other and their model. Learning Microsoft Access will be a good start for a beginner to learn and practice how database works even though it is not powerful enough compared to other database management software. Since nowadays jobs are relying on technology, having computer knowledge is very important to keep ourselves not to be outdated. Similarly, people with knowledge of database will have better job opportunity because most large business and manufacturing company will hire them. Movie Essays - Romanticism in the Film Version of The Big Sleep

Romanticism in the Film Version of The Big Sleep      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Raymond Chandler's novel The Big Sleep, he presents two sisters, Vivian and Carmen. These women become the central characters, aside from Philip Marlowe, and they control much of the action in the novel. The 1946 film version of The Big Sleep, however, manipulates Chandler's characters considerably. Aside from playing with the dialogue of the novel, the screen-writers change the very essences of Vivian and Carmen. Perhaps it is the casting of the film which forces changes from the novel, or perhaps the Production Code keeps the writers from developing the women in the way that Chandler does; either way, the film version of The Big Sleep makes the story romantic and often cliche.    Vivian and Carmen, sisters, are presented by Chandler as psychotic and dangerous women. Vivian, is described in detective Philip Marlowe's thoughts as "tall and rangy and strong-looking...Her hair was black and wiry and parted in the middle and she had the hot black eyes of the portrait in the hall"(Chandler 17). She is cool and manipulative, instantly suspicious of Marlowe's presence in her world, and she plays her suspicions off as insults. When she meets Marlowe, she says, "So you're a private detective,...I didn't know they really existed, except in books. Or else they were greasy little men snooping around hotels"(Chandler 18). Marlowe plays right back at her, countering every snide remark with one of his own. When Vivian tells Marlowe she doesn't like his manners, his response is,    I'm not crazy about yours...I didn't ask to see you. You sent for me. I don't mind your ritzing me or drinking your lunch out of a Scotch bottle...I don't mind if you ... ...ynamic together, the script is allowed to be less than what the novel created. This is exactly what happened with The Big Sleep. Marlowe and Vivian took a backseat to Bogart and Bacall. The sisters, Vivian and Carmen, had to be altered to create the effect of romance and intrigue. There was really no other way to go within the restrictions of the Production Code, as Carmen couldn't be played up to her full potential, so the director took Vivian and made her the leading lady. The essences that Chandler created for these two women were dynamically altered for the film in order to create two women without the demons or psychoses that he had intended.    Works Cited    Chandler, Raymond. “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck Essay

The prosecution will begin by establishing the character of the defendant, and further prove that the criminal acts committed by Ms. Catherine Ames were not random, but rather a part of a cynical mindset that deliberately caused harm. Catherine Ames was without a doubt, a stunning work of beauty with the power to make all heads turn everywhere she went. She have lovely gold hair, big hazel eyes, pointy small chin along with a delicate nose, and high cheekbones giving her a heart shaped face. She was an adorable child that became an irresistible woman with the power to make all man fall head over heels. With a timid smile and a soft spoken voice, this appears to be the perfect woman. However, let us not be fooled by her angelic appearance. Catherine Ames is a cruel, manipulative, sadistic being who knows how to get anything she wants through the lust from men. She was able to use her beauty to her advantage even as a young child. The very first incident was when Ms. Catherine Ames used her wittiness and manipulative skills to inflict moral and physical pain to two boys. The boys received immense punishments for actions that she herself encouraged, but declared herself a victim to preserve her reputation. Cathy used her sheer beauty and manipulation to seduce her Latin teacher James Grew. When she had James Grew’s heart in the palm of her hand, she denied him any affection or love, making him commit suicide. Cathy took an educated kind man and turned him into rubble just because she could. As Cathy grew she became more destructive and morally impotent. It became quite clear that Cathy had no respect for authority when she ran away from home and went to Boston. She was pushed to the edge after being caught trying to run away from home and was beat and punished. Driven by agitation she stole all her father’s money out of his safe. She cleaned the cellar and stuffed papers all around the edges of the foundation to block the draft. She oiled the hinges, the lock of the kitchen door and the hinges of the front door. She continued to prepare, on the night of the crime, she put on an old apron to protect her clothes and found a jelly jar and carried it to the carriage house. She then found a chicken, cut its head off, and filled the jar halfway with the blood. She then buried the evidence of the chicken.  She then took off the apron in the kitchen and put it on the stove. She poked the coals until the apron caught on fire. Again before leaving she hid the evidence of the jelly jar. She remorselessly locked her parents in their house and set it on fire. Her parents sad death did not make Cathy shed a tear as she was looking into a new exciting career: prostitution. When she meets Mr. Edwards she is keen to provoke him to become sexually attracted to her. After he puts her up in his own house, keeping her from his wife and providing for her, she begins to steal from him. She also locks him out of his own house and takes control of his property. When he realizes something horrible about Cathy, he attempts to get her drunk one night. While drunk she stabs him with a broken wine glass. Driven by her intoxication, she stabs him in the cheek and sends him running away from his own house. Her impulsive and evil nature was evident through her actions that night. After a bad run in with the whoremaster Mr. Edwards, Cathy successfully manipulated Adam Trask to fall in love with her. After Adam had provided Cathy with unconditional love and support during her weak time, she repaid him by sleeping with his brother Charles behind Adam’s back. After they moved to California to start off new Cathy and Adam had their twins she coldheartedly did not want to look at them claiming â€Å"No. I don’t want them† After she recovered from giving birth, she abandoned Adam and the twins. After abandoning her husband and children Cathy became a working girl in a whorehouse. Now under the alias Kate, Cathy manipulated Faye the owner of the whorehouse into signing a will giving everything to Cathie upon Faye’s death. After, slowly and painfully killing Faye, Cathie assumed control of the whorehouse. When it was thought that Cathy could not go any lower, when her son Caleb discovered the truth about her and wanted to be a changed man, she told him he can’t and he will become exactly like her as he grows up, sinful and damned. It’s quite clear that Cathy is not a noble human being with good intentions. Her life has been filled with nothing else but hatred for others and schemes to get as much money as possible. Evidence presented here after show the  criminal acts that Cathy has committed throughout her life, crimes that she admitted to performing without remorse. Cathy had committed crimes against law of the nation and crimes against religion as well. Even though she is no where near of being religiously moderate, she still followed the religion of Christianity for her marriage to Adam Trask. Cathy did commit some major felonies toward God such as committing adultery. First, adultery means having sexual relations between an individual who is married and someone who is not the individual’s spouse. In Christianity, adultery is considered a major sin which shows betrayal and lack of trust by that individual in the marriage. In the last two lines of Chapter 11, it states â€Å"Suddenly Charles laughed. â€Å"The Poor bastard,† he said, and he threw back the blanket to receive her.† Cathy did not care if she slept with Charles. Better yet, she does not embrace her marriage by sleeping with Charles. She is an embodiment of pure evil driven by self-hatred, desperation, and a love of pain, and Cathy destroys lives without any sen se of remorse. She wanted something to satisfy her cruel nature and did so behind Adam’s back. In the bible, Cathy is directly compared to Eve when Eve eats a forbidden fruit and introducing sin into the world. Cathy did the same by committing a forbidden act of trust and friendship. This proves to show the hypocrisy that exists in Cathy with no moral influence or structure. Cathy, without mentioning anything to her husband Adam, tried to abort her two children with a knitting needle while Adam was out obtaining information on his plot of land. If that isn’t terrible enough, Cathy gives the reason that she has a family history of epilepsy and did not want to pass it on to her children which is a blatant lie. This attempt at abortion was a complete secret from Adam until she was found unconscious due to a great lose of blood. Cathy tried to murder her unborn children while Adam was away and didn’t even tell him that she was pregnant in the first place. This was a disgusting act of attempted murder upon two completely helpless and vulnerable unborn children in which Cathy should be punished for. After Cathy attempted to murder her unborn children Cathy moved onto bigger and more horrific things. She attempted to murder Adam, her husband. A week after the birth of newborn twins, Cathy decides that she is going to abandon them and leave Adam alone. Before leaving, Cathy pulled out a handgun and shot Adam. Luckily she had bad aim and only hit him in the shoulder but we all know that she was aiming to kill him. After Cathy shot Adam, she ran out of the house and out of Adams’ life forever. This is the second time Cathy attempts to murder someone in her life. First it was her unborn children, and now her husband. Cathy is nothing but a murderer and cares for nothing but to inflict pain upon others. Another sin in which Cathy tries to commit is suicide. Suicide is not illegal by law in the nation except for some states, but this act of killing oneself is considered a sin and a crime against god. One of the commandments states that specifically â€Å"Thou shall not kill† which can pertain to a person’s life or their own life. In page 554, Cathy takes her own life by using a cyanide pill. This by far is much is strongly against the teachings of God and it goes against one of his commandments. God said there will be consequences for whoever commits suicide and that would be punishment in hell. Cathy may have her reasons to commit suicide, such as arthritic pain, low self esteem, and a painful life. However, this is the life she chose to follow as being sick and maliciously evil towards others which caused the downfall for her life.

Macbeth as a tragic hero essays

Macbeth as a tragic hero essays The play Macbeth, written by Shakespeare is a tragedy. Tragedy is the most moving genre in plays. In a tragedy there is a big difference between good and evil, and there is an occurrence of pleasure and suffering. A tragic hero is someone with a potential for greatness, posses a fatal flaw which leads to his downfall and suffering. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth is a tragic hero because he fulfils the criteria for being one. Macbeth has a high status in Scotland. He is the thane of Glamis and cousin to the King, Duncan. Macbeth fights bravely for King and country. His Captain also commends on Macbeths fighting, when he says, Yes, as sparrows eagles, or the hare the lion. If I say sooth, I must report they were as cannons overcharged with double cracks (I, II). Macbeth is likened here to an eagle, a lion and an overcharged cannon, as this shows his power and how great he is on the battle field. Macbeth defeats Macdonwald in war and then deals with a second assault successfully. Macbeth fights well and fiercely. Ross confirms this when he makes this comment Till that Bellonas bridegroom (I, III). This means that Macbeth can be the bridegroom of Bellona, the goddess of war. Her bridegrooms are normally the fiercest of warriors, so being likened to one of them is an honor. Duncan shows utmost respect and approval of Macbeth when he says this, O valiant cousin, worthy gentlemen! (I, II). The evidence of the admiration which Duncan has for Macbeth, is when he gives him his new title, thane of Cawdor. Macbeths potential for greatness is also shown in his close and loving relationship with his wife, who he deeply respects my dearest partner of greatness(I, IV). Macbeth eagerly shares his good fort ...

Good Great Gatsby essay essays

Good Great Gatsby essay essays American society during the 1920s was a time of cynicism, loss of values, and was mainly defined by ideological and social battles. World War I was a turning point to society and altered the class structure through ideological reform. After the war, which had been called the war to end all wars by Wilson, people began to lose their sense of ideals resulting from disillusions of the true purpose of the war. This marked the disappearance of faith and common values such as American Dream, the age-old ideal that had so far been the key to Americas success, the ideal of working hard to achieve goals, and the replacement of material wealth for spiritual ideals and morals. The traditionalists, who acquired money through legal means and still retained a strict sense of morality, were reluctant to accept the modernists into their society because they seemed jaded by corruption of materialism. The modernists were the group of people who as a result of their disbelief in morals and values had become dependent on money rather than the betterment of their souls spiritually. The modern aristocrat was characterized by using money as power and by giving in to greed and carefree lives. The main conflict in society was of money overpowering morality or modernists against traditionalists. Most of the other parts of society had not been caught up in the new fervor of corruption and were still living the American Dream. These people were suppressed by the dominant modern, urban society in which they were ignored by the fast paced, elite upper class. The Great Gatsby examines this dominant society and through the characters that represent the urban society, it portr ays subtly criticizes and encourages change in this society. The Great Gatsby as a whole was a great social insight and documentation of the life and ideals of the 1920s. It could be a warning of the dismal future of society if people did not recover their ideals and values and repair the...

Investments in Emerging Countries - Essay Example Higher global crude oil price is expected to benefit Russia’s economic recovery. But this benefit will be carried away by the expected capital outflows. The capital outflow of Russia is much higher compared to that of the inflow. Business Risks in Czech Republic: The political risk of Czech Republic is lesser compared to that of Russia. Rising oil price is one of the business risks in Czech Republic. Annual oil production of the country is much below its annual oil consumption. (Theodora, 2011) Therefore, the rising oil bills will increase cost of production and paving way for an inflationary situation in the country. Another risk of the country is the strict legal system. Bureaucracy is at an increased rate in the country. Another risk factor is that the capital market of the country is small. Czech Republic is mostly an export related economy with majority of its exports being to other European countries. Therefore, the performance of the country’s economy depends lar gely on the stability of other European nations.
